How to Prepare a Manuscript Before Publishing
A manuscript can be complete as a story and still be unready for production. Publishing readiness means the text, structure, front matter and format decisions are stable enough to create dependable ebook and print files without repeatedly rebuilding them.
Finish the editorial decisions first
Complete structural revision before line-level polish. There is little value in perfecting sentences inside a chapter that may be removed or rewritten. Confirm the opening, central escalation, character or argument progression, ending and expected genre payoffs.
Decide which professional stages the book needs: developmental editing, copyediting, proofreading, specialist factual review or sensitivity review. A readiness audit can identify risks, but it does not replace every specialist service.
Run a continuity and consistency pass
- Names, ages, dates and physical descriptions
- Timeline and travel duration
- Point of view and tense
- Capitalisation and invented terminology
- Chapter numbering and scene breaks
- Series facts carried from earlier books
Maintain a style sheet or canon record so corrections remain consistent across the manuscript and later formats.
Prepare front and back matter
Confirm the title page, copyright information, dedication, contents, acknowledgements, author note, series information and any calls to action. Include only what genuinely belongs in the edition, and test every link intended for the ebook.
Lock the publishing metadata
The title, subtitle, author or pen name and series information inside the book should match the details entered during title setup. Late metadata changes can create inconsistencies across the cover, interior and retail page.
Separate ebook and print requirements
A reflowable ebook adapts to reader-selected font and screen settings. A paperback has fixed trim, margins, gutter and page count. Do not use the print PDF as a substitute for a properly prepared reflowable ebook.
For print, choose the trim size and interior settings before final pagination. The final page count then informs the paperback cover template and spine.
Proof the produced files, not only the source
Review the EPUB on more than one screen size and inspect the paperback PDF page by page. Use platform previewers, then order a physical proof where appropriate. Look for blank pages, broken scene dividers, widows and orphans, clipped text, incorrect running heads, link errors and cover alignment.
