KDP Paperback Cover Size Explained
A KDP paperback cover is a complete print wrap: back cover, spine and front cover, plus required production allowances. Its exact dimensions depend on the book that will be printed. That is why a paperback wrap should not be finalised before the interior page count and print specifications are stable.
The inputs that determine the cover
The final cover dimensions depend on several choices made in KDP: binding type, interior ink, paper type, page-turn direction, units, trim size and final page count. Change one of those inputs and the spine or overall wrap can change.
Trim size is the finished page size after manufacturing. Bleed is artwork intended to extend beyond the trim edge so that small cutting variation does not leave an unwanted white line. Important text and logos must stay inside the safe region shown by the template.
Why the final page count comes first
Spine width is tied to the physical interior. Editing, font changes, margin changes and front-matter adjustments can alter the page count. If a wrap is produced too early, its spine can become too narrow or too wide.
Bleed is not the same as a safe zone
Background artwork that reaches an edge should extend through the bleed area. Text, author names, logos and other critical details should move inward, away from trim and fold boundaries. The official template visualises these areas more reliably than a remembered universal measurement.
The barcode area also needs attention. If Amazon will add the barcode, avoid placing essential artwork or text where the barcode may appear. If you supply your own barcode, follow the current KDP specifications.

Enter the exact production choices in KDP's Print Cover Calculator and download the resulting template. Place it as a temporary guide layer in the design file, align the artwork to it and remove the guide before exporting the final PDF.
Do not reuse a template from a different page count or paper choice simply because the trim size is the same.

- Front, spine and back panels align with the current template.
- Backgrounds extend through required bleed.
- Critical text remains inside safe boundaries.
- Spine text is used only when the page count supports it.
- The back-cover copy is readable at print size.
- The exported PDF contains no template layer or crop-mark mistakes.

What to give a cover designer
Provide the final title and author name, trim size, interior type, paper choice, page count, back-cover copy, barcode decision and the freshly downloaded KDP template. If those details are not final, label the wrap as provisional.
