Book-performance diagnosis

Why Is My Self-Published Book Not Selling?

Low sales do not identify the cause. A book may be difficult to discover, easy to find but unconvincing on the detail page, or attractive at purchase but disappointing to the intended reader. Treating every problem as a marketing problem can waste money and hide the real constraint.

Use the three-layer diagnosis

Separate the problem into discoverability, conversion and reader satisfaction. These layers influence one another, but they require different evidence and different remedies.

Layer 1: discoverability

Ask whether the correct reader can find and recognise the book. Review the title and subtitle, categories, keywords, genre signal, series information and any traffic sources currently in use.

If almost nobody suitable sees the detail page, changing a paragraph deep inside the description is unlikely to create a measurable difference.

Layer 2: conversion

If readers reach the detail page but do not buy or borrow, inspect the cover at thumbnail size, the opening of the description, price and format presentation, review context and coherence across the page.

Do not assume the cover is poor simply because sales are low. It may be beautiful but signal the wrong genre, or the listing may contradict it.

Layer 3: reader satisfaction

If the book receives initial interest but little read-through, completion or recommendation, investigate whether the manuscript fulfils the promise. Opening pace, continuity, structure, genre expectations and payoff may matter more than additional promotion.

Important limitNo single metric proves manuscript quality or reader satisfaction. Use patterns across available data, reader feedback and the book itself.

Use evidence carefully

  • Record impressions, clicks, sales or borrows over a meaningful period.
  • Separate paid, promotional and organic activity.
  • Do not treat family purchases as market validation.
  • Compare changes one at a time where possible.
  • Keep dates so a cover, description or price change can be evaluated honestly.

Algorithms, competition and seasonality create noise. Avoid confident conclusions from one quiet day or one unexpected sale.

Choose the smallest useful action

If the issue is discoverability, start with metadata and positioning. If it is conversion, review cover and description alignment. If the manuscript does not deliver, pause promotional spending and assess readiness. A coordinated Book Relaunch makes sense only when several public-facing elements genuinely need to change together.

If you cannot identify the layer, the Free Book Health Check provides a limited initial diagnosis without requiring a KDP password or full manuscript.
